Guide to Men's Fragrances | Eric Bandholz

Today, we're talking men's fragrances, and how to find the perfect scent for you!

Fragrances are made up of essential oils, or fragrance oils - basically, things in nature that emit a smell or scent. In the case of synthetic fragrances, the natural scent will be filtered down and identified, and mimicked.

With all fragrances, it is important to keep in mind the three notes of a scent: the top note, the middle note, and the base note. Top notes are scents that are more intense and able to be smelled immediately, however only last for a short time. Middle notes sit at the in-between point, and base notes are the longer lasting and more mellow aromas.

It's also important to remember that fragrances interact with everyone's natural body chemistry differently - the way a fragrance smells on someone else might not be the way it smells on you. It's all about trial and error here, and you have to find the fragrance that works best for you.

Eau de Parfums are the highest quality, typically containing 20-40% of a fragrance oil, and diluted in an alcohol. Eau de Toilettes are in the mid-range, usually containing around 5-20% fragrance oils. Eau de Colognes come in at the 3-5% fragrance oil range, and from there you get into things like aftershaves and body splashes.

Mixing and matching fragrances is another matter of trial and error - some fragrances work well together, and others just don't.

There's a new movement in fragrances that sees fragrance oils mixed in different bases, other than alcohol-based. The two primary bases are base oils like a jojoba, or into a solid like shea butter.

And gentlemen, bear in mind that fragrances are one of the most allergenic items on the market, so it's important to be considerate of those around you.
