Developing a Daily Hair Routine

As a man gets older and finds himself giving added thought to his own personal style, hair care becomes an increasingly pivotal part of your life. Everyone has their own routine and, depending on your type of hair, every guy needs to go through different motions to achieve the look and feel that they’re aiming for.

According to Beardbrand founder Eric Bandholz, ideally you should aim to wash your hair once every three days, especially if your hair is on the thinner, finer, or more oily side. Much like your beard, you don’t want to over wash your hair and strip away the essential natural oils that it produces. Shampoos differ from brand to brand and specificity, but there are an endless number of options if you go looking. From dry shampoos to lather-free varieties, experimentation is the best way to find whatever products are best for you.

Now when you’re in the shower itself, it’s important to get as much hair to shower head exposure as possible, especially for guys with longer hair. While in the shower, dip your head while leaning back and push your hair back to get a lot of exposure of your head to the shower head itself. This will ensure cleaner hair and help keep your hair back once it’s dried. Then gently towel dry your hair and continue on by letting it air dry, no combing needed. Use your fingers to get the tangles out, but besides that, keep your routine lowkey. When you need some volume or texture, utilize your favorite products or a blow dryer. Of course, when you don’t feel like dealing with the oiliness, you can simply put your hair up into a bun or ponytail, if that’s an option for your hair length.
